A free bus ride, a walk along the canal and into the back garden of the Earl of Powis (Powis Castle). I saw swans raising themselves above the ice to break through the frozen canal waters, surprised birds of prey, heard the screaming of buzzards overhead and rambled through frost, brilliant sunshine and snow. Finally I turned a corner, coming face to face with over a hundred deer. That's what I call a good day.
For those of you not familiar with the Border counties of Wales, the timbered building, is in fact brickwork painted black and white in a wide variety of patterns. Earlier in the century they would have been brown and cream (so a guy told me today).
