Very Happy Christmas
and a Blessed New Year

Nadolig Llawen a Blwydden Newydd Da!

Saturday, 10 October 2015

For the whole of October 2015 I have been offered space to hang paintings in the tourist information centre right on the harbour wall in Aberaeron. Aberaeron is a small Welsh town built on a grid pattern brought back by the sailors coming and going to Boston and similar places in the states.

St David's - the smallest city in Wales.

Sorry I've not been around for a bit. Sometimes I struggle with my Google accounts not letting me in.

I am very pleased to be back in the art scene having moved just over a year ago.
Here is the interactive guide to all of the artists from this year.
There is also a link to the website on t

Back Streets of CEINEWYDD [K eye newoo i th] New Quay Ceredigion

This is the planning stage - blocking in - for my latest painting of Ceinewydd. I am working from a photograph as the weather was so cold that the whole of my body was screaming for the heat of the car. The sun was blazing but the wind was from the Arctic North.
The yellow building is the start of the street called 'Stryd Hen Coleg' (Old College Street).
We think it may once have had a small training facility perhaps to get people ready for going to sea. Maybe they gave skills to the new mariners,  in navigation, wind, wave & tide.

I like pink.

Little Flossie is just 3 but already likes PINK & PURPLE! She thought is was very funny that a painting could be in the room and on my PC.

'Getting to Know You'

I am beginning to realise that until I paint an object I actually know very little about it ... after all, apples are round and red .... aren't they?
These are 9 little explorations of one apple, taking just 10 minutes for each look. When I started the apple was very subtle and complicated, so I decided to paint the apple in one colour using acrylic ... fantastic, just what I needed.

'50 Shades of Grey'

This is the finished painting, started on the beach with the tide pushing me hard every few minutes.
Days later I used photo references to compose a satisfactory scene. It is slightly brighter than it seems to come on the screen.

'SISTERS' 6"x6" oil/acrylic on canvas

Yes, surrounded by water, a whole ocean, but unable to fill my brush cleaning pot!
Here I am painting plein air on the beach a few minutes walk from my house.
I set up my easel and then over the time I was painting had to move back and back as the billows raged against me. Great fun. I will maybe finish this one indoors.

Listen to Wisdom

Mt first time back into still life after a long time. For Christmas I was able to get Carol Marines book 'Daily Painting' and have enjoyed taking in some of her suggestions. As a landscape painter I have a tendency to add white to make things recede which is OK for massive distances or weather conditions. But still life has very little distance evolved therefore the colours can remain much more focused and saturated in strength.
The old cup is addressing the young fruits from a point of superiority.

We live in a great place - the sun comes up at the front, and sets at the back of the house. It is like a continual adventure.
